I joined StumbleUpon last week, after I heard about it several times at different places. But I was confused how it works until I read your article. Thank you so much. Being a new blogger, there are so many things to learn.

This is a good overview of how StumbleUpon works. I finally downloaded and installed the toolbar a few days ago after someone unexpectedly Stumbled my article about avoiding ATM surcharges. I came along later and gave it a second "thumb", and this seems to have triggered the traffic generation - I received about 160 visits to that page a few hours later. Now I just need to figure out how to attract more stumbles to my other pages.

Kailani—Oh, I hope not. (PS, thanks for "thumbing" MamaBlogga!)

There are lots of social sites where it's gauche to post your own stuff (Digg, etc.). In my opinion, it's okay on SU (or maybe marginal). I do it every week or every other week. I kind of encourage it, since you can control the description and tags.

Another way to make sure your page gets traffic from SU is to buy it, a nickel apiece. It's not a bad deal.

I have a question. Does it matter if you "discover" your own site versus someone else discovering it?

Thanks for the info!

Neena: Sometimes I "turn off" the toolbar to further minimize clutter: right click on any of the menu bars and select Stumble Upon toolbar. That hides it. I always keep my bookmarks toolbar hidden, anyway.
