No thanks, I’m all set (for now)

The other day I was doing laundry and I finally remembered that one of Hayden’s baby outfits had fallen between the washing machine and the wall. After a little effort, I extracted the sleeper from its trap and tossed it in the wash with the rest of his clothes.

Once they were clean, I folded them (duh). As I was folding the little outfit, I noticed how small it was. It’s hard to believe my little guy was such a teeny tiny guy! I can barely remember it, but he was quite teeny tiny. See how small his face was compared to my hand?

When Hayden was so teeny tiny and every day it seemed like motherhood would kill me, that was my theory about why people had more children: because they’re so cute and tiny and seeing a small one when you’ve got a big one makes you all nostalgic and baby-hungry.

Now, though, I’m starting to change my mind. We’re finally moving into an easier phase of babyhood and I’m falling more and more in love with my little guy every day. I can finally think about the possibility of having another without questioning my sanity.

Then again, maybe that’s all the more reason to doubt my mental health.

Don’t despair, Aunt Jaime!

Hayden couldn’t keep his hands off Aunt Jaime’s face when she came over last week.

This week, she came over to show off this:

Last week I mentioned that they’re getting serious and now she’s officially engaged (or, as Dad likes to say it, en-gagged). He popped the question on Saturday while they were down in California for her to meet his parents. They sound like nice people.

Possibly the weirdest part? Jaime and her now-fiancé, Russel, dated the exact same amount of time that Ryan and I did before getting engaged. To the day.

The first question (after “Can I see the ring?”) is always “Do you have a date?” They’re getting married on November 18th. It’s a good choice for Jaime since she can take a longer vacation from work for her honeymoon with Thanksgiving, but traveling at that time is going to make our ticket prices higher (though hopefully not as high as at Christmas).

My mom had her heart set on having Baby’s First Christmas out there, but we can’t afford to fly out twice in two months. We were also planning on spending Thanksgiving with Ryan’s parents, especially since we could introduce Hayden to Ryan’s grandparents (they’re 89!) en route. I guess we’ll just have to switch the order of our trips.

Sigh. And I did so like our former plans.

Raisin’ him right.

What has Hayden so enthralled? What else . . .

Yeah, we’re raisin’ him right. Maybe we won’t need that college savings fund.

Bootie call

What did you expect? Thanks to Aunt Brookie for the adorable penguin booties. They’re the first “shoes” he’s worn. They stay on pretty well, too—a lot better than socks with the way he’s been kicking lately.

Look, ma, no student loans! (hopefully)

We’ve had the paperwork for this since before Hayden was born, but we finally got around to sending it in a couple weeks ago. Then last week, we got this in the mail:

It seems like pretty much everyone agrees that Utah has one of the best 529s out there. I’m excited: I like planning for the future. I just hope we plan enough!

Fish face

Hayden has learned to make the fishy face. Here’s an okay illustration of his newest talent:

(It’s so hard to catch these faces with a digital camera; they’re so fleeting!)

Speaking of fish babies, I hope we’ll get to take Hayden swimming soon. There’s a church swim party next Tuesday, but I’m afraid it won’t start until too close to Hayden’s bedtime. Ryan and I will have to take him some Friday, or maybe when our families are in town.

Glub glub glub!
