Rachel’s two!

Today was Rachel’s birthday. She got some very fun gifts and some cute outfits. Best of all, I let her eat all kinds of treats–chocolate cookies, chocolate chips, peanut butter cups . . . even two tiny handfuls of straight sugar tat I couldn’t wrest away from her after she ripped open a ten-pound sack. She was pretty thrilled (even if she decided to use her special birthday dinner [pizza] as lotion).

I needed to follow up that mother of the year act with something even awesomer, so I shot for the elusive highly-breakable-and-zero-fun-to-play-with gift category.

The winner? A piggy bank. I was hoping to find a purple one for her (I consider it “her” color, and Rebecca already has a pink piggy bank), but all I found was an interesting alternative:

Did she like it?

Um, yes. (Okay, really she’s trying to peer into the slot.)

It seemed like the older kids were most excited about Rachel’s birthday. Hayden and I were talking when he abruptly announced, “I’m gonna go give Rachel a double hug, because I love her so much–and she’s two years old!

Rebecca even composed a song for her sister: “Oh, Wachew, I’m so g’ad you came into our famiwy. Today’s you biwtday. Today’s you SPECIAW! DAY! I awways wanted a sistay wike you!

Rachel loves songs. She wasn’t singing when I snapped this, but this is how she sings (note her hand positions, especially her left) (and imagine a small child singing as loud and low as she can).

Rachel isn’t the only one growing up. Hayden finished kindergarten last week. Yesterday, he announced, “I’m a first grader now.”

“I know!” I said. “That’s crazy.”

[Biggest grin all day] “It’s not crazy! It’s fun!” [pause] “It’s funner than fun.”

Yes. Yes, it is.

30 by 30 (or not)

So on Monday, I turned 29. I have a good friend who’s a few months older than me, and just over a year before her impending 30th birthday, she set a goal to go on 30 dates (among other fun goals).

Don’t worry, Ryan, I’m not setting the same goal.

I was thinking about coming up with 30 goals to accomplish by the time I’m 30, but . . . we’re down to 363 days here and my biggest weakness with goals is setting them waaay too high, so I don’t know if I have time for that. Also, I can’t think of 30 things. Isn’t that sad?

So, instead, I took a cue from my sister (who has a 26 by 26 list, but who’s also doing this) with a monthly focus goal. Now, twelve goals, I can do (in no particular order):

  • Get back into the habit of keeping a journal after, you know, skipping probably the biggest decade of my life—college, courtship, kids—just that).
  • Lose some weight (and get a scale so I can figure out how much…)
  • Be a better sister/daughter/friend
  • Write more personally
  • Declutter my home & establish routines to keep it clean
  • Get around to the home improvements I’ve meant to do since we moved in. (Six and a half years ago.)
  • A goal for writing, possibly another book.
  • A month of reading
  • A month of playing (some time in the summer)
  • Read and work on The Anger Diet
  • A month of creating: cooking (knife skills!) and other crafts
  • A month of intensive gospel study

Now, a lot of these aren’t quantifiable in this form, but don’t worry—I’ll fix that when I get to them.

What do you think? What do you want to do or wish you had accomplished by 30?

Surprise!

I asked Hayden what kind of birthday party he wanted, and he went into great detail describing a surprise party (where people hide and jump out and yell “Surprise!”). Which was kind of a surprise to me, but I wanted to make it happen, if I could.

So I invited a couple friends and we went down to Chuck E. Cheese while Ryan and Hayden ran some errands. Once we were ready, Ryan blindfolded Hayden with a knit cap and drove him to CEC. Once they were in the doors, Ryan took off the hat—but the friends were still hiding.

When Hayden passed the kid check, finally we let the other kids run out and shout . . . okay, so they didn’t actually say “Surprise” but they ran out as a surprise.

Hayden . . . wasn’t that surprised? After about 10 seconds, he realized who these people were and was very excited. But it seemed like the biggest surprise was when he saw me with the camera—before he saw his friends.

Ah well. A surprise visit to Chuck E. Cheese makes any six-year-old’s birthday, r

Rachel’s birthday

Yesterday my baby turned one! It’s hard to believe it’s been a whole year—and only a year—since she joined our family. We love her so much! Here’s my little cutie:

rachel and bday cake
Celebrating with homemade angel food cake and strawberries. (We had angel food and strawberries for Rebecca’s first birthday, too, I believe)

rachel's animal cars
Fun little wheely animals!

rachel eating bday candy
She knows the good stuff! And yes, that is a wrapped candy bar bite in her mouth.

rachel's cute bday outfits
Cute outfits! (Note the candy still in her hand.)

rachel with her car toy
My personal favorite: a little car & dashboard. (I wanted a toy like this for my second or third Christmas. Apparently I could find the toy in the catalogue on command and point to it to tell my parents and anyone else who asked what I wanted.) (Oh, and I got it. It was awesome.)

Happy birthday girl! (With cake in her hair)

I keep wondering if she’s crazy small or if I just don’t really remember the other kids at this age. I mean, she can walk across rooms and my other kids couldn’t at this age. So finally I dug out some pictures and stats of the kids on their birthdays—she’s totally normal. (Take THAT, grocery-store-guy who asked if she was two or three months old!)

B is for . . .

Birthday!

Because today is mine!

(And to be honest, this is why I wanted to do the A to Z challenge. It’s just too perfect.)

I haven’t opened my birthday presents yet, but I have a couple for you: yesterday’s Aquaphor giveaway (entry form fixed now!) and the beginning of my latest fiction WIP, Façade!

A full hand!

Hayden turned five yesterday! We had a little party with his preschool class, complete with s’more cupcakes (mmmmmmmmmmm).

The first thing he got for his birthday wasn’t really planned, but I had to make a quick run and happened to ask if he was old enough, and he was:

His first library card!

He insisted on checking out my books for me. I let him enter his own PIN on the touchscreen at checkout. He was very happy. (He was also quite proud of the map the librarian gave him. I was quite proud that he printed his first name himself.)

He got the Pillow Pet (or Piwpet, as Rebecca calls hers) he’s been wanting since before Christmas, and the “mo-trol” car (remote control) he’s been wanting since he played with his cousin’s at New Year’s, as well as some awesome building toys that he’s already hard at work with. (He’s built a two foot tall crane on the dining room table!)

Also fun: Aunt Jasmine is visiting!

In the last week, Rebecca turned 2.5, Ryan turned… another year older, Hayden turned 5 and Rachel will be 8 months tomorrow. Me, I’m just a loser 😉 .
